Police support city's discipline campaign<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Dibyo Widodo said
\nthe police will support all city administration measures to
\npromote the National Discipline Movement in the capital.<\/p>\n
\"The police have already made a lot of effort to make the
\npublic obey existing rules, such as observing traffic signs,
\ndisposing of litter in the proper place, standing in line in an
\norderly manner and adhering to working hours,\" Widodo said
\nyesterday, adding that the police completely support the drive to
\ninstill a high sense of discipline among the public.<\/p>\n
Earlier on Monday, Governor Surjadi Soedirdja stressed that
\nthe National Discipline Movement drive in Jakarta could ill
\nafford to meet with failure.<\/p>\n
On the same occasion on Wednesday, Brig. Gen. Sutiyoso, the
\nChief of Staff of the Jakarta Military District Command, said
\nthat the most important thing is the public's awareness of the
\ndiscipline movement.<\/p>\n
\"But we have to admit that the facilities needed to ensure
\npublic discipline are not adequate. For example, we expect people
\nto line up at bus stops. How can they queue if the facilities
\nneeded are not provided?\" Sutiyoso said.<\/p>\n
He added that once the public has a high degree of discipline,
\nthe government will be able to closely supervise and even issue
\nrulings that would prevent people from behaving against the
\ndiscipline movement.<\/p>\n
Last Saturday, President Soeharto launched the nationwide
\nDiscipline Campaign during the National Awakening Day to
\nencourage people to use the Indonesian language correctly and to
\nobserve basic elements of discipline.<\/p>\n
The government has always taken the opportunity to instill
\npatriotism in citizens on National Awakening Day. (31)<\/p>",
