Police still checking on officer's shooting

JAKARTA (JP): Police are still gathering facts on the shooting of a 21-year-old North Jakarta police officer, Sofjan Sani.

City Police Chief May. Gen. Hamami Nata said yesterday the police would take action against suspects, two East Jakarta officers, if they were found guilty of violating shooting procedures.

He did not comment further on Sofjan's family's plan to sue the police and report to the National Commission on Human Rights if police could not prove their version of why the officer was shot.

Two officers have been detained for questioning.

At City Hall, Speaker M.H. Ritonga said he was sure police chiefs would not let the matter go by, citing the detention and Hamami's statement that action would be taken.

"Do not be suspicious, investigations are on-going," Ritonga said.

The father of the deceased earlier said the family rejected allegations that Sofjan was an extorter. Later Hamami raised the possibility that Sofjan might be a bogus officer, which the family also regretted. (ste/anr)
