Police shut file on McDonald's boss

JAKARTA: Police said on Wednesday that they had closed the
file on the Rp 40 billion corruption case implicating the
American fast-food restaurant boss, Bambang Rachmadi, as they had
failed to find any strong evidence to prove a violation.

"We cannot proceed with the case as we have found no violation
in the case," said Adj. Sr. Comr. Anton Wahono, chief of the city
corruption crime division.

Bambang was named last year by police as a key suspect in the
graft, which allegedly occurred in 2000. He was accused of
misusing Rp 40 billion in funds he borrowed from state-owned
Jamsostek, which oversees the social security insurance scheme
for workers.

He was summoned several times but failed to appear for police
questioning as he was abroad.

BRI II receives another bomb threat

JAKARTA: The Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) II building received
a bomb threat on Wednesday afternoon from an anonymous caller who
said that an explosive had been planted on the 24th floor,
forcing the building management to evacuate all tenants.

The threat turned out to be a hoax.

Imran S., an employee at BRI, said the bomb threat was the
second this year; the first occurrence was in March, when the
U.S.-led coalition forces attacked Iraq.

Police officers came to check the building, but a police
source at the scene said that the officers were only allowed to
comb the restrooms, while the main rooms remained locked.

The building management declined to comment on the incident.

Security guards at the building have imposed a tighter
security check of searching the bags of visitors. -- JP

Hundreds of 'ojek' drivers stage rally

TANGERANG: Hundreds of motorcycle taxi (ojek) drivers blocked
Jl. Rawa Bokor near the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on
Wednesday as part of their rally to protest PT Angkasa Pura's
decision to ban them from entering the airport.

During the rally, they blocked the road that links the airport
with Jl. Daan Mogot in West Jakarta with their motorcycles,
causing heavy congestion on both sides of the road for
almost three hours.

"We don't understand why ojek are banned from entering the
airport terminal, while many airport employees and other people
use our services every day," Suban, one of ojek drivers, told The
Jakarta Post.

He said that he and other drivers earned Rp 30,000 (US$3.5)
daily from taking people into and out of the airport terminals.

"Now, we are not allowed to enter the airport terminals. It
means that we will have no income. We do not really understand
why," he added.

Starting on Wednesday, airport operator PT Angkasa also closed
the M1 Gate to the public, an alternative access road from the
airport to Tangerang municipality. As a result all vehicles
heading to the airport from Jl. Daan Mogot must pass by Jl. Rawa
Bokor.--JP
