Police shoot and kill alleged thief

Tangerang Police detectives shot dead an alleged member of a gang of motorcycle thieves operating in Pasar Kemis district, Tangerang regency, early on Tuesday.

The chief of detectives, Adj. Comr. Kustanto, identified the suspect as Sakam, 23, a resident of Larangan village, Rajek district, Tangerang regency.

Kustanto said the suspect was shot and killed as he tried to escape while leading police to his accomplices. He added that the suspected ignored repeated warning shots fired by officers.

He said the suspect was arrested at his residence on Monday evening and later was asked to lead officers to his accomplices in Sukatani village, Pasar Kemis.

"As soon as we arrived in Sukatani village and got out of the car, the suspect ran away, ignoring our warning shots," Kustanto said.

He said officers shot the suspect twice in the back, killing the suspect instantly. --JP
