The police have clarified the motive behind the viral zig-zagging by drivers on the Becakayu Toll Road in East Jakarta. The officers said the behaviour was performed to create content. The motive was to generate content while also selling cars, as some of the drivers work in car trading. The head of Lantas Patroli Jalan Raya (PJR) of Ditlantas Polda Metro Jaya, AKBP Reiki Indra Brata Manggala, said on Saturday (7 March 2026) that six drivers were involved in the zig-zag. He said the police had met the drivers and issued verbal warnings. ‘We approached the motorists and issued verbal warnings and educational admonitions with the aim of ensuring they do not repeat the act,’ he said. He noted the drivers are around 25 years old and already hold a driving licence. He added that the drivers had apologised and were not fined. ‘We prioritise preventive measures and provide guidance of an educational nature,’ he said. Earlier, an amateur video widely circulated on social media showed five cars travelling together in a convoy on the Becakayu Toll Road on the night of Wednesday 4 March. The vehicles appeared to switch lanes in a zig-zag fashion from one lane to another, with some footage showing movement from lane 1 to lane 3 in turn. The dangerous manoeuvre gave the toll road the impression of being blocked by the convoy. While traffic on the toll road appeared relatively light, the zig-zag action was still deemed dangerous. Such driving behaviour can lead to accidents, particularly if other vehicles are travelling at high speeds. The action also drew condemnation from the public, who were unsettled by the disorderly conduct on the toll road.
