Police Promise Firm Action Against Civic Organisations Forcibly Demanding Eid Allowances
The Indonesian National Police (Polri) has stated it will take firm action against the phenomenon of civic organisations (ormas) allegedly making forced demands for Tunjangan Hari Raya (Eid allowances or THR).
“I will first investigate the matter. If it is proven that there has been a violation, the police will certainly take enforcement measures,” said Deputy National Police Chief General Dedi Prasetyo at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, 11 March.
On a separate occasion, National Police Public Relations Division Chief General Johnny Eddizon Isir urged members of the public disturbed by these extortion efforts to file complaints with the police. He stated that citizens can report instances of forced THR demands through the 110 hotline.
“In principle, it is a matter of goodwill, if someone wishes to contribute. But if someone feels disturbed, please use our 110 hotline,” he said during a press conference on Wednesday, 11 March.
Isir explained that the nearest police units would provide action ranging from warnings to legal enforcement against perpetrators. However, Isir emphasised that legal action against civic organisations demanding THR from residents would be pursued as a last resort if coercion continues.
“If it becomes structured and truly causes public distress, the possibility of legal enforcement action is not ruled out. But that is the last resort,” he said.
