Police probe toddlers' deaths

SURABAYA, E. Java: Police plan to question two women whose four-year old toddlers died last week when they left them unattended in a car with the air-conditioning running in a supermarket parking lot, Antara reported Saturday.

East Java Police Chief Maj. Gen. Sumarsono, however, dismissed the suggestion that the two women had purposely left the children to die in the car.

Sumarsono said he was still waiting for a report from investigators. "But I wonder, would a mother really kill her own child? I don't think so."

The two women said they had left their children in the car because they were asleep and they did not want to disturb them.

Police believe the toddlers died of exhaust inhalation.

"They may be charged with recklessness. But this is a different kind of recklessness than that in a traffic accident," Sumarsono said. "They were just unlucky," he added. (09)
