Police name 12 IAIN students as suspects
BANDUNG, West Java: Bandung Police named on Monday 12 students at state Sunan Gunung Djati Islamic Institute (IAIN Sunan Gunung Djati) as suspects in the death of student Imam Nawawi, during an extracurricular activity at the institute on Friday.
Eight students were named suspects after they were accused of beating Imam, and the remaining four, who were committee members in the Basic Training for Nature Lovers in the institute, were also named suspects for negligence that led to Imam's death.
Bandung Police chief of detectives Adj. Comr. Slamet Uliandi said that the case was the second in Bandung in the last three years.
In August 2001, Hendrik Tano Senjaya, a student at Parahyangan Catholic University also died after attending a basic training held by the Student Regiment (Menwa) at the university.
Imam died after he joined a 40-kilometer march from Situ Lembang in north Bandung to the Sunan Gunung Djati Islamic Institute campus in East Bandung.
The eight suspects were charged under Article 170 of the Criminal Code for causing death, which carries a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison. Four others were charged with negligence resulting in death, under Article 359 of the Criminal Code that carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. -- JP
