Police name 12 IAIN students as suspects<\/p>\n
BANDUNG, West Java: Bandung Police named on Monday 12 students at
\nstate Sunan Gunung Djati Islamic Institute (IAIN Sunan Gunung
\nDjati) as suspects in the death of student Imam Nawawi, during an
\nextracurricular activity at the institute on Friday.<\/p>\n
Eight students were named suspects after they were accused of
\nbeating Imam, and the remaining four, who were committee members
\nin the Basic Training for Nature Lovers in the institute, were
\nalso named suspects for negligence that led to Imam's death.<\/p>\n
Bandung Police chief of detectives Adj. Comr. Slamet Uliandi
\nsaid that the case was the second in Bandung in the last three
\nyears.<\/p>\n
In August 2001, Hendrik Tano Senjaya, a student at Parahyangan
\nCatholic University also died after attending a basic training
\nheld by the Student Regiment (Menwa) at the university.<\/p>\n
Imam died after he joined a 40-kilometer march from Situ
\nLembang in north Bandung to the Sunan Gunung Djati Islamic
\nInstitute campus in East Bandung.<\/p>\n
The eight suspects were charged under Article 170 of the
\nCriminal Code for causing death, which carries a maximum sentence
\nof 12 years in prison. Four others were charged with negligence
\nresulting in death, under Article 359 of the Criminal Code that
\ncarries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. -- JP<\/p>",
