Police Investigate Viral Monkey Chained at Margonda-Juanda Intersection in Depok
“Officer-in-charge has been directed to investigate,” said Beji Police Chief Kompol Antonius to journalists on Monday (25 May 2026). Social media images show the monkey chained to a metal pole at the Margonda-Juanda traffic light intersection in Depok. It is reported that the animal has been tethered there since late 2025, enduring daily exposure to extreme weather and vehicle pollution due to its location on a busy thoroughfare. Previously, the Depok City Fire and Rescue Department (DPKP) confirmed they had checked the viral monkey incident. Tessy Haryati, Head of Operational Control at DPKP Depok, stated the monkey belongs to a street performer. “We have verified this before; the owner is a street performer,” Tessy told journalists on Sunday (24 May). She added that the street performer’s whereabouts were unknown, but local residents confirmed the monkey is owned by a performer who often sets up at the Margonda-Juanda intersection. “When we checked, the performer was not present. Information from nearby residents indicates the monkey belongs to a street performer who frequently operates at the Margonda-Juanda junction,” she said.
