Police Investigate Case of Infant Body Found in Cisokan River, Cianjur
Cianjur — The Cianjur Police Resort in West Java is investigating the discovery of a male infant’s body without umbilical cord found in a distressing condition in Cisokan River, Campaka Mulya District, when discovered by residents whilst fishing on Saturday.
The Head of Campaka Police Station, Bripka Angga, when contacted on Saturday, stated that officers immediately proceeded to the location after receiving a report from residents and eyewitnesses who first discovered the infant body, estimated to be just four days old.
Officers immediately conducted a crime scene investigation and gathered statements from witnesses to determine who dumped the baby in the river. The infant’s body was subsequently taken to the local health centre for examination before being buried.
“We received reports from three witnesses who found the infant body floating in Cisokan River whilst fishing. They became suspicious due to a foul odour emanating from the body, which had already begun to be eaten by maggots,” he stated.
Upon encountering this, witness Edi Junaedi confirmed the source of the putrid smell by searching for its origin, which turned out to be the infant body covered with dried leaves in the middle of the river, already infested with maggots. The witness then reported the discovery to two other colleagues.
The witnesses eventually reported the matter to local authorities and subsequently to officers at Campaka Police Station, whereupon the infant’s body was evacuated and buried in the local public cemetery.
“We are still investigating and developing leads to apprehend the person who disposed of the infant, suspected to be someone from outside the local area, deliberately dumped in the river to conceal evidence,” he said.
Information from residents and eyewitnesses indicated that the infant’s body was estimated to have been in the river for four days, deliberately disposed of to remove traces.
“We suspect the person responsible is from outside our community who deliberately threw the baby into the river because for the past several months there has been no pregnant woman in our area in late pregnancy. When discovered, the baby’s body was already in an advanced state of decomposition,” said eyewitness Asep Suparman.
