Jakarta, VIVA – The case of alleged discrimination against a primary school student is currently under public scrutiny after the police decided to launch an investigation.

This step was taken following a report from the victim’s parents, who assessed that their child was treated unfairly by the school.

The Southwest Papua Regional Police Chief, Brigadier General Pol Gatot Haribowo, personally led the Hearing Meeting regarding the alleged discriminatory actions against a primary school student with the initials MKA.

However, the Kalam Kudus Sorong School, which is the respondent in this case, did not attend the meeting that took place yesterday, Tuesday (17/3/2026).

The Indonesian Solidarity Action Forum for Transparency and Independence (PASTI Indonesia) condemned the school’s absence.

PASTI Indonesia Director, Susanto, emphasised that the school’s absence without any representative demonstrated a lack of respect for the Southwest Papua Regional Police Chief and the National Police institution.

“The Kalam Kudus Sorong School in an important agenda to hear from the relevant parties. Even amidst his busy schedule, the Southwest Papua Regional Police Chief made time to lead the agenda,” said Susanto.

On the other hand, the Chairman of the Kalam Kudus Sorong School Foundation, Lex Wu, was unable to attend due to undergoing an examination at the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency, but there should still have been a school representative at the meeting.

“Even if the Foundation Chairman was unable to attend, there should still be school representatives present. This is a serious case involving child discrimination, and the Southwest Papua Regional Police Chief demonstrated his seriousness by leading the Hearing Meeting,” stressed Lex Wu.

MKA’s parents also expressed their disappointment. JA, MKA’s father, highlighted the school’s attitude in ignoring the official invitation from the Regional Police Chief. “It’s amusing; an official invitation from the Regional Police Chief is considered unimportant by the respondent.”

The Southwest Papua Regional Police Chief affirmed that his side would remain professional in handling this report.

In addition to reporting the Kalam Kudus Sorong School to the Sorong Police Resort and the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency, the parents, accompanied by PASTI Indonesia, also wrote to various related institutions, including the Indonesian Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM), and the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), to follow up on the alleged discrimination and bullying experienced by MKA.

This case highlights the importance of child protection in educational environments as well as the commitment of law enforcement institutions in upholding the rights of discrimination victims.
