Police foil burglary, man shot

JAKARTA (JP): Police shot and wounded a man when he resisted arrest after attempting to burglarize an office on Jl. Bendungan Hilir in Central Jakarta on Tuesday.

His three accomplices escaped during the raid, Tanah Abang police precinct head Capt. R. Sigit Th. told The Jakarta Post.

Sigit identified the apprehended man as TJ, aged in his mid 40s. He is hospitalized at Kramatdjati police hospital in East Jakarta for a gunshot wound to his thigh.

According to the officer, the raid was conducted by personnel from the Bendungan Hilir police station acting on a lead from local residents. Their suspicions were aroused by a group of four men in a blue Kijang minivan who arrived at the office at 9 a.m. The building was empty for the national holiday.

Locals reported that the vehicle's front and back license plate numbers did not match.

Police arrived to find three of the men carrying items, including computers, from the office to the vehicle, where TJ was waiting behind the wheel.

Sigit said police shot TJ but the three other men escaped by blending in with the crowd in the busy market area.

"The investigation of the case is still underway. The robbers could be charged under Article 363 of the Criminal Code," he said.

It carries a maximum penalty of nine years in jail. (ivy/ylt)
