Police Find Four Different Licence Plates in Reckless Driver's Car in Gunung Sahari
Police found four vehicle registration plates in a car driven recklessly and against traffic, colliding with several vehicles in the Gunung Sahari area, Central Jakarta.
The Director of Traffic at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Komarudin, stated that an initial examination of the driver had been conducted, including a urine test. “The urine test came back negative, but four different pairs of vehicle registration plates were found in the car,” said Komarudin when contacted on Thursday (February 26).
The four pairs of plates consisted of two B plates, one G plate, and another B plate. Police are still investigating the ownership and purpose of these plates.
“We are still investigating the authenticity of these plates, but it is clear that they were not used for their intended purpose,” he added.
The incident occurred on Jalan Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (February 23) afternoon. The car was initially spotted by officers driving recklessly in heavy traffic.
“The officers asked the driver to pull over, but he ignored them. The officers then followed him as he turned onto Jalan Gunung Sahari IV. He then turned onto Gunung Sahari IV,” he explained.
Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated. A chase ensued and was captured on the dashboard camera of a patrol car.
“On that small road, he was driving at high speed, which was captured on the patrol car’s dashcam. He then turned left towards Bungur, and the most serious incident occurred when he entered Gunung Sahari V, which is a one-way street. Many vehicles, including motorcycles, were almost hit because he was still driving at high speed,” he said.
In the Pasar Baru area, the driver again drove against traffic by entering Jalan Budi Utomo from the right lane. Officers continued the pursuit.
“The officers stopped at an intersection, and in the middle of the road, he turned around and headed back to the intersection. At the intersection, he turned left, where officers were waiting. He almost hit one of our officers, then turned towards Ancol, but he still refused to stop,” he said.
The driver then drove towards Ancol. However, because he was blocked by a queue of vehicles at the Pintu Besi traffic light, he turned around again and drove against traffic, hitting several vehicles.
“The officers continued to follow him. When he reached the Ancol area at the Pintu Besi traffic light, which was red, he was blocked by the queue. He then turned around again and headed back towards Pasar Baru, on the same lane, not changing lanes. This is what was captured on camera,” he said.
The Head of the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Reynold Hutagalung, said that the driver was driving recklessly and against traffic because he was found to be using fake plates.
“He was suspected of using fake plates on Jalan Gunung Sahari, so he was stopped by traffic officers Aiptu Basri and Aipda Jimber,” said Reynold.
“He was afraid and fled, turning onto Jalan Gunung Sahari and driving against traffic from south to north,” he added.
