Police confirm Tambora incident was single-vehicle accident, not mugging
Police have urged the public to be more discerning and avoid spreading unverified social media claims about street crime after viral posts falsely claimed a man involved in an accident near a mall in Tambora, West Jakarta, was a mugging victim. Police confirmed the victim was involved in a single-vehicle accident while under the influence of alcohol. “We urge the public not to believe information spreading on social media and always verify before sharing,” said Kanit Reskrim of Tambora Police Station AKP Sudrajat Djumantara to reporters in Jakarta on Monday evening. The warning follows a single-vehicle accident on Monday early morning at Mall Season City in Tambora, which left the motorcyclist’s leg nearly severed. Images of the victim went viral on social media, falsely labelled as a mugging incident. Sudrajat confirmed the victim, identified as AP, was involved in a single-vehicle accident, not a mugging. “The report is fake or untrue. The actual incident occurred on May 24 in the early morning, around 4:30 to 5:00 AM, when a single-vehicle accident involving victim AP took place,” Sudrajat said. The victim, who was under the influence of alcohol, was riding from Grogol towards Pluit. “However, he lost control and hit a concrete barrier in Tambora, resulting in a right leg injury. The victim admitted to being under the influence of alcohol,” he said. The accident was handled by the West Jakarta Metropolitan Police Traffic Unit (Satlantas). It is known that images of the man with a severed ankle spread and went viral on Threads social media platform under the account @eceuririn. The post included videos and photos of a man with a severed leg, falsely claimed to be a mugging victim at Mall Season City in Tambora, West Jakarta. The post received numerous comments, with netizens expressing concern and fear over the misreported mugging incident.
