Jakarta, VIVA – National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo believes that the recommendations from the Police Reform Acceleration Commission regarding the strengthening of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) can be sufficiently addressed through revisions within the Police Law.

“Yes, I think in the revision of the Police Law, it will regulate how the National Police and Kompolnas operate,” said Sigit to reporters at National Police Headquarters in Jakarta on Thursday, 7 May 2026.

The four-star general believes that there is no need for a new law to regulate Kompolnas. However, he stated that it would be sufficient to include several strengthening measures within the revision of the Police Law.

“So, there is no need for a new law. But how the functions and authorities there are strengthened and included in that revision of the law,” he added.

Previously, the Chairman of the Police Reform Acceleration Commission, Jimly Asshiddiqie, said that President Prabowo Subianto had approved the proposal to strengthen the National Police Commission (Kompolnas). This aims to increase the effectiveness of oversight over the police institution.

“The President strongly approves the strengthening of Kompolnas,” said Jimly at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, 5 May 2026.

Jimly acknowledged that strengthening Kompolnas is very important to provide legally binding force to every decision and recommendation issued. In addition, the strengthening of Kompolnas will be regulated in law.

“The Republic of Indonesia Police Commission is strengthened so that its decisions and recommendations are binding. And its membership will no longer be ex officio as it is now, but agreed to be independent, so the oversight function over the police becomes effective, more effective for the future. And this must be regulated in law,” stated Jimly.

Jimly added that the new points from the reform commission’s work will soon be integrated into valid legal frameworks. Currently, the process has entered the stage of preparing regulations to be discussed with parliament.

“Well, it has been decided that in the law, it will then be submitted for the preparation process, and now there is already a draft law ready to be discussed in the DPR. So, we just insert the new points from this reform commission there,” said Jimly.
