Police arrest elderly man for stabbing ex-wife at son's wedding reception in North Jakarta
Jakarta (ANTARA) — The criminal investigation unit of Tanjung Priok Police Station has arrested an elderly man with initials EF (67) for stabbing his ex-wife, ES (55), at his son’s wedding reception held at Gelanggang Remaja on Sunter Karya Timur Street, Sunter Agung Ward, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Saturday, 23 April, in the afternoon.
“The suspect’s motive for committing this criminal act is believed to be revenge, but we are still conducting further investigation,” said Handam Samudro, head of the criminal investigation unit at Tanjung Priok Police Station, in Jakarta on Sunday.
He stated that the suspect brought a letter that he had written before heading to the wedding reception. In the letter, the suspect expressed feelings of resentment towards his ex-wife regarding several matters that occurred during their marriage.
“So the suspect had prepared both a letter and a knife to stab the victim,” said Samudro.
As a result of the incident, the victim sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital for intensive care.
The suspect and evidence have been brought to Tanjung Priok Police Station headquarters in North Jakarta for investigation and prosecution of the case.
According to witness statements, the incident occurred at noon on Saturday, 23 April, when the suspect, the victim’s ex-husband, arrived at the wedding reception of their son at Sunter Karya Timur Street.
As he shook hands on the reception stage, the suspect suddenly drew a knife that he had allegedly prepared beforehand. The knife had been stored in the suspect’s bag and whilst shaking hands, he stabbed the victim once. The woman immediately collapsed and the building’s security called the Tanjung Priok Police Station’s criminal investigation unit.
“We immediately arrived at the scene, collected witness statements and other evidence. The suspect has been charged under Article 468 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code, specifically for premeditated assault with a maximum prison sentence of four years,” said Samudro.
