PLN supports maritime sector decarbonisation through Onshore Power Supply
Jakarta (ANTARA) - PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo has expressed readiness to support the decarbonisation of the maritime sector, primarily through the provision of electricity for Onshore Power Supply (OPS) facilities, which reduces the reliance on diesel engines.
“Through OPS, the electricity needs of ships can be met from land-based power sources, thereby suppressing the use of diesel engines. This step is part of PLN’s efforts to support the decarbonisation of the maritime sector while encouraging the creation of a greener and more sustainable port ecosystem,” Darmawan stated in an official statement confirmed by ANTARA in Jakarta on Thursday.
Darmawan noted that providing electricity for OPS facilities aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s ‘Astacita’ programme, specifically in driving industrial decarbonisation as part of the transformation towards sustainable development in the maritime sector through the development of Green Ports.
This effort is crucial, he continued, given that the maritime sector contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions, while a significant portion of ship emissions in ports originates from the use of diesel engines during the berthing process.
He added that the provision of electricity for OPS facilities demonstrates the readiness of PLN’s electrical infrastructure to support energy requirements in port areas.
“This is a form of SOE synergy in supporting the transformation of the port sector through the use of domestic energy, while simultaneously boosting productivity through cost savings for maritime businesses and optimising port activities,” said Darting.
The OPS facility at DSN, Tanjung Priok, is the first in Indonesia to pass the international standard test IEC/IEEE 80005-3:2025. Its reliability was proven through a series of full connection trials last July, which allowed all ship generators to be turned off while docked.
Through this OPS system, electricity from the PLN grid is distributed to ships via conversion facilities that support ship requirements with frequencies of both 50 hertz (Hz) and 60 Hz, enabling the service of two to four ships simultaneously.
