JAKARTA — PT PLN (Persero) has dismissed concerns about a coal shortage for steam-powered electricity plants due to adjustments to the Work Plan and Budget (RKAB) and production cuts. Rizal Calvary Marimbo, PLN’s Director of Generation Management, said the state electricity company has secured coal supply of 84 million metric tonnes from eight major suppliers: Adaro Indonesia, Arutmin Indonesia, Berau Coal, Kaltim Prima Coal, Kideko Jaya Agung, Multi Harapan Utama, Indominco Harapan Mandiri, and Bukit Asam.

‘Total supply to be delivered is around 84 million metric tonnes,’ Rizal told journalists at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) in Jakarta on Wednesday, 4 March 2026.

The situation has raised concerns that the national electricity supply could be threatened with outages. Rizal stressed that coal supply for power plants is in adequate numbers. He said the 84 million tonnes from eight suppliers is believed to be sufficient until the end of August 2026. He noted that PLN has secured assignments from the eight main coal suppliers for both PLN and independent power producers (IPPs).

‘PLN has just secured the assignment certainty to the eight main coal suppliers for PLN and IPP,’ he added.

Rizal also assessed that the condition of the coal-fired power plants reported by APLSI does not necessarily reflect stockpiles. According to him, the Plant Operating Day (HOP, Hari Operasi Pembangkit) should be viewed from the stability of the ongoing supply. As long as coal supply enters consistently and does not show a significant downward trend, plant operations will remain safe.

‘If we say HOP of 10 days, that means it is running continuously. What matters is stability and not a continual decline,’ Rizal said.
