PLN Restores 5,579 MW Power Supply Following Sumatra Blackout
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo stated that 5,579 megawatts (MW) of power has been restored to 1,770 affected customer distribution networks. This follows the Sumatra blackout on Friday, 22 May 2026. ‘PLN continues to restore power to all customers,’ Darmawan said in a written statement on Monday, 25 May 2026. The power supply was confirmed restored after Darmawan inspected the grid repairs at the Sumatra Transmission and Load Control Unit (UIP3BS) in Pekanbaru, Riau, on Sunday. PLN continues to monitor power supply to public facilities such as hospitals, airports, and community service centres. Prasodjo stated that all electrical parameters in the Sumatra system are now stable and operating optimally, ensuring continuous power supply for the public. PLN is monitoring the power system in real time via UIP3BS, the operational control centre for Sumatra’s electricity grid. ‘With real-time monitoring, any on-ground developments can be promptly addressed, ensuring the system remains safe, stable, and optimal in meeting public electricity needs,’ he said. Previously, the Sumatra blackout occurred at 6:44 pm WIB due to severe weather. This caused disruptions to substations and transmission systems, particularly in southern, central, and northern Sumatra. Initial indications point to a 275-kilovolt transmission line between Muara Bungo and Sungai Rumbai in Jambi as the cause. Affected provinces include Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, and Jambi. On behalf of PLN, Darmawan apologised to the public for the inconvenience. ‘We are once again doing our utmost, deploying all available resources and remaining on standby to restore the power system as quickly as possible,’ he said at a press conference on Saturday, 23 May 2026.
