PLN Implements This Strategy to Promote More Efficient and Low-Emission Offices
PT PLN (Persero) has begun implementing a smart energy management system in its office buildings through the introduction of the Smart & Green Building programme. This initiative was launched at PLN’s Head Office in Jakarta on Friday (8/5). Thanks to this programme, PLN offices are equipped with rooftop solar PV systems, electricity usage control systems, and digital-based room cooling to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. PLN’s President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, stated that technological advancements have made energy management in buildings increasingly integrated and automated. Therefore, PLN needs to adapt by building a more flexible and modern energy system. “In the past, PLN’s paradigm was to sell electricity and optimise costs. Now, PLN is transforming into a Digital Energy Platform that orchestrates the energy ecosystem through collaboration and value creation,” Darmawan said in a written statement, quoted on Monday (11/5/2026). He continued that developments in technology such as rooftop solar PV, electric vehicles, and building automation mean that buildings and homes are no longer just energy users. “In the future, buildings and homes will no longer just consume energy but will also be able to produce and manage it themselves. Therefore, PLN must be prepared to face an increasingly digital and two-way energy ecosystem,” he explained. As a pilot project, the Trapesium Building at PLN’s Head Office is now equipped with a rooftop solar PV system with a capacity of 89.28 kilowatt peak (kWp), integrated with an Energy Management System as the building’s digital control centre. The system enables more efficient and real-time monitoring and regulation of energy usage. On the other hand, PLN’s Independent Commissioner, Andi Arief, views the implementation of Smart & Green Building as an important step for PLN to bring real energy efficiency practices into the company environment. “We are an energy selling company. It wouldn’t look good if we talk about energy transition to customers, but our own offices are still wasteful. PLN must be the showcase of energy efficiency itself,” said Andi. Andi added that the application of sustainability principles is also part of the company’s strategy in building more efficient and sustainable operations. “Sustainability is not just an additional cost, but part of the company’s efficiency and future investment,” added Andi. Meanwhile, PLN’s Executive Vice President for General Affairs and Property Assets, Khairullah, explained that the Smart & Green Building programme is carried out through synergy within the PLN Group, where PLN Icon Plus together with the PLN Pension Fund acts as the building management provider with a managed service scheme. “In the initial stage of 2026, PLN begins implementation in 10 buildings, including the Trapesium Building at the Head Office which has been operational with integrated rooftop solar PV and Energy Management System,” said Khairullah. In that initial stage, PLN targets the installation of rooftop solar PV with a capacity of 1,100 kWp and 471 IoT Smart AC units connected to a digital energy monitoring system. Looking ahead, PLN has mapped around 400 buildings suitable for rooftop solar PV installation out of a total of 1,300 buildings managed by the company across Indonesia. “In the 2026-2035 roadmap, PLN targets a rooftop solar PV capacity of 12 megawatt peak (MWp), the use of 7,251 IoT Smart AC units, and a contribution to carbon emission reduction of up to 0.3 million tons of CO2 equivalent,” Khairullah concluded. Furthermore, PLN targets this programme to be implemented gradually in hundreds of PLN Group buildings across Indonesia until 2035 as part of the modernisation of energy management and company operations.
