PT PLN (Persero), Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company, is expanding the number of public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLU) at key points along the main homecoming routes for the 2026 Eid holiday to accommodate the anticipated surge in electric vehicle usage among travellers.

PLN’s Chief Executive Officer Darmawan Prasodjo stated that the number of homebound travellers using electric vehicles is estimated to increase approximately 1.6 times compared to the 2025 Eid homecoming period.

“There will be families travelling home using electric vehicles. The number is estimated to increase 1.6 times compared to last year’s homecoming,” said Darmawan following the opening of the National Command Post for the Energy and Mineral Resources Sector during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr in Jakarta on Thursday, 12 March 2026.

To address this anticipated increase, PLN is expanding the SPKLU network by approximately 1.8 times compared to the previous year, enabling travellers using electric vehicles to charge more conveniently during their journeys.

“We are increasing the number of SPKLU on homecoming routes by approximately 1.8 times compared to last year so that families travelling in electric vehicles can reach their destinations smoothly and return home,” he said.

Beyond expanding charging capacity, PLN is also optimising SPKLU infrastructure along homecoming routes by converting some slow charging facilities into ultra-fast charging systems. Darmawan also emphasised PLN’s commitment to ensuring the national electricity system’s readiness during the 2026 Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr period.

He noted that primary energy availability for power generation remains secure, with gas and fuel oil reserves exceeding nine days of operational needs and coal reserves averaging more than 19 days of operations.

Darmawan explained that maintenance of power plants, substations, and transmission networks has been conducted ahead of schedule to minimise potential electricity supply disruptions during the Eid homecoming period.

“We are ensuring the national electricity system remains prepared and reliable to support the community’s needs during the Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr period,” he stated.

During the 2025 Eid homecoming period, PLN deployed approximately 3,529 SPKLU units distributed across around 2,400 locations throughout Indonesia.

The expansion of SPKLU numbers this year is expected to further facilitate homebound travellers using electric vehicles. This infrastructure strengthening initiative is part of PLN’s broader efforts to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in Indonesia.
