Plastic Prices Rise up to 40 Percent, Jakarta Provincial Government Seeks Stabilisation
JAKARTA — The Jakarta Provincial Government is endeavouring to contain the sharp rise in plastic raw material prices that has occurred significantly in recent times. This price increase is feared to impact the prices of food and beverages widely consumed by the public.
Head of the Industry, Trade, Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises Department (PPKUKM) Elisabeth Ratu Rante Allo stated that her office will maintain the stability of plastic raw material prices in Jakarta in accordance with the governor’s instructions.
“In line with the Governor’s directives, we will try to maintain the stabilisation of plastic raw material prices in Jakarta,” Elisabeth revealed in her official statement received by Kompas.com on Saturday (11/4/2026).
Elisabeth added that PPKUKM will coordinate with business actors and distributors to ensure the availability of goods in the field.
“And to anticipate the subsequent impacts on food and beverage prices, especially those widely consumed by the public,” she said.
The rise in plastic prices in Jakarta is currently said to have reached an average of 30 to 40 percent. This price surge began at the end of March 2026, in line with the escalation of geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East.
Globally, the main plastic raw materials have traditionally come from the oil- and gas-rich Middle East region. Conflicts in that area, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, have disrupted supplies and triggered price increases.
On the other hand, domestic production has not yet been able to meet the national need for plastic raw materials.
