PKB Legislator Rejects Government Takeover of Election Bill: It Is a Step Backwards
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Member of DPR RI Commission II from the PKB Faction, Muhammad Khozin, has rejected the proposal to shift the initiative for the revision of the Election Law (RUU Pemilu) from the DPR RI to the government. According to him, such a move would actually constitute a regression in the process of drafting and preparing the discussion that is already underway in the DPR. “The discourse on shifting the proposer of the Election Bill from the DPR to the government is technically a step backwards in the process currently ongoing in the DPR,” said Khozin when contacted on Monday (11/5/2026). In addition, Commission II of the DPR has followed up on the discussion by holding a public hearing (RDPU) with various parties, from academics to non-governmental organisations focused on electoral issues. “The DPR has also tasked the Council Expertise Agency (BKD) to design, synchronise, and create simulations of crucial issues that will be needed in the discussion of the Election Bill,” explained Khozin. He reminded that the stages of the 2029 Election will begin around 20 months before voting day, or in early 2027. Therefore, the discussion of the revision to the Election Law is deemed necessary to be expedited immediately. “Ideally, the process currently underway should be continued and promptly discussed jointly with the government, considering that 20 months before the election or in early 2027, the election stages must commence,” said Khozin. “The discussion of the Election Bill must be promptly addressed jointly by the DPR and the government to prepare for the 2029 Election in a more optimal manner. This discussion also distances us from the stigma of conflict of interest,” concluded Khozin. “If, for example, after half way, 2.5 years it still hasn’t been completed, then there’s no harm in renegotiating who will submit the draft,” said Yusril on Wednesday (29/4/2026). Nevertheless, Yusril stated that the government is still waiting for the DPR’s steps regarding the discussion of the revision to the Election Law. “I don’t yet know the latest developments, but the government to date is still waiting for the draft to be completed and prepared by the DPR,” he said.
