Pigai Says Prabowo's Mediation in the US–Iran Conflict Constitutes Humanitarian Intervention
Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai said that President Prabowo Subianto’s initiative to act as mediator in the Iran conflict represents humanitarian intervention. He assessed that war runs counter to human conscience. This follows the escalation of the conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran. Pigai stressed that a war with no end should not be allowed because its consequences extend to global humanity. He urged individuals, communities, leaders, and even large and small countries to show concern and shared responsibility to push for humanitarian intervention in order to create peace, including in the Middle East. ‘All sides have equal interests and moral obligations to contribute to peace,’ Pigai said in a written statement on Wednesday (4 March 2026). Pigai said Prabowo’s wish to take on the role of peacemaker is part of humanitarian intervention. According to him, the move is a tangible contribution by Indonesia in promoting a world order that is more peaceful and just. ‘That stance is part of a humanitarian intervention. Of course it is something very good. No one wants war because it has wide consequences for global humanity,’ he said. He emphasised that nothing is wrong with Prabowo’s active involvement in the peace process. Pigai assessed that the stance aligns with Indonesia’s ethos, now holding the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council in promoting and protecting human rights at the global level. ‘Through this spirit, let us not feel small, inferior, or incapable,’ he concluded.
