Phone Call with Trump: Putin Urges End to US-Israel War Against Iran
Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on Monday, 9 March 2026, local time. During the call, Putin pressed for a swift resolution to the war with Iran.
Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov, as reported by Reuters and TASS news agency on Tuesday, 10 March 2026, disclosed that the hour-long telephone conversation was initiated by the United States.
Ushakov stated that the conversation between the two leaders focused on discussing the Iran and Ukraine conflicts, as well as the situation in Venezuela.
This was the first telephone conversation between Putin and Trump in over two months, and the first to be publicly announced since the US and Israel launched a large-scale military offensive against Iran on 28 February.
When briefing journalists about the telephone conversation, Ushakov said that Putin urged “swift political and diplomatic resolution” to the US-Israel war against Iran, which has become a key Russian ally.
“Naturally, emphasis was placed on the situation surrounding the conflict with Iran,” Ushakov told journalists.
“The Russian President outlined a number of ideas aimed at resolving the conflict as quickly as possible through political and diplomatic means, including in relation to his latest contacts with the leaders of Gulf states, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and several other leaders,” he stated.
In response to Putin, according to Ushakov, Trump “conveyed his assessment of the situation in the context of the ongoing US-Israel operations”.
“There was a detailed exchange of views on that matter, which I believe will be beneficial for both parties,” Ushakov added.
Furthermore, Ushakov described the Putin-Trump telephone conversation overall as “professional, open, and constructive”. He characterised the entire discussion as “highly substantive” and said it “is likely to have practical significance for further cooperation between the two countries”.
