Perunggu Concert at Jogokariyan Mosque in Yogyakarta Sparks Buzz on Social Media, This Is What the Takmir Says
A brass-band performance by the Perunggu group at Jogokariyan Mosque during Kampoeng Ramadhan Jogokariyan drew attention on social media. The band was invited by Jogokariyan Mosque to be one of the guests in Kampoeng Ramadhan Jogokariyan.
A video showing Perunggu entertaining the audience, as shared by the Instagram account @yklc.media, was circulated online. “@perunggu_ became one of the guest stars at @kampoengramadhanjogokariyan.id by @masjidjogokariyan,” the post read, as seen by detikJogja on Saturday, 7 March 2026.
Comments on the post were lively. Some praised the mosque management for using a musical approach to attract young people to the mosque, but many felt holding a concert in a mosque was excessive.
Responding to the issue, Haidar Muhammad, Secretary of the Takmir Masjid Jogokariyan, confirmed inviting Perunggu as a guest star. He explained that the choice of guest stars is heavily influenced by references from the younger generation.
“So what needs to be understood is that for the Ramadan committee, we entrust it to the teenage group. The reference to Perunggu is suitable for them because it aligns with their generation’s tastes and has Islamic content,” Haidar told detikJogja this afternoon.
He added that the main objective of inviting Perunggu was actually to attract more visitors to the mosque, especially for those who have rarely attended.
“The motivation is to reach and bring to the mosque people who have not yet visited the mosque. So the committee youths took the initiative to invite Perunggu,” he said.
“There was actually also a talk show. But what appeared was more like a concert. We do acknowledge that there may have been missteps and we will rectify them,” he added.
He also noted that the choice of Perunggu was not made without consideration. The committee viewed that several of the band’s songs carried spiritual messages, even though not explicitly religious in tone.
“Young people are mindful of Perunggu’s lyrics, even if not always explicit, and many speak about the connection between a person and God. We also know personally that the band members pray regularly, and on the day itself they even observe tarawih first,” he explained.
Nevertheless, he did not deny there was public opposition to the band’s presence in the mosque environment. He said the various inputs would be used as evaluation material for future activities.
“We understand it has become controversial in the community. All input, criticism, and suggestions will be used as evaluation and learning. We do not deny that some things were not quite appropriate; God willing we will fix them and re-evaluate,” he said.
“Going forward we will first evaluate internally. We will consult with seniors and the Ustazs to have a clearer guideline,” he concluded.
