Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – As part of its commitment to support Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2060, PT Pertamina (Persero) continues to accelerate the development of a sustainable energy and mobility ecosystem. This strategic move is carried out through various integrated energy transition initiatives across the national transport sector.

The commitment was stated by Agung Wicaksono, Director of Transformation and Sustainability Business at PT Pertamina (Persero), during the Sustainability Studium Generale event entitled ‘Global Insights for Local Action: Bridging Academia and Industry in Energy Transition’, organised by Universitas Pertamina in Jakarta on Thursday, 21 May 2026.

The Studium Generale Sustainability is a public lecture that brings together global academics, industry players and cross-sector stakeholders to strengthen the younger generation’s understanding of the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition. The forum serves as a platform for collaboration between academia and industry to drive the development of practical solutions toward low-carbon development and sustainable mobility in Indonesia.

In his presentation, Agung explained that Pertamina is taking an active role in the long-term energy transition through technology readiness, ecosystem strengthening, and cross‑sector synergies.

‘This collection of efforts is directed at supporting the achievement of Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission target in 2060, in line with the government’s strong commitment under President Prabowo Subianto,’ said Agung.

In the land transport sector, Pertamina is not only strengthening the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem through the construction of charging stations and battery swapping in collaboration with the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC). Pertamina is also building an integrated bioethanol plant in Glenmore, Banyuwangi, East Java. The project is connected to the local sugarcane plantation area to secure a sustainable feedstock supply while strengthening domestic energy resilience.

In the maritime sector, Pertamina is promoting energy efficiency through dual-fuel use, the development of green ammonia, and innovations such as solar panels installed on ship decks to support independent shipboard electricity supply.

In the aviation sector, Pertamina, via Pelita Air, supports the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This environmentally friendly fuel uses used cooking oil as feedstock, providing a concrete solution to reducing carbon emissions in the aviation industry globally.

In line with these developments, the Acting Rector of Universitas Pertamina, Djoko Triyono, emphasised that the energy transition requires close collaboration among stakeholders to deliver solutions relevant to national needs.

‘Energy transition cannot be pursued by industry or government alone. It requires close collaboration among academia, industry, government and society to deliver solutions relevant to local needs. Universitas Pertamina is committed to acting as a bridge that connects research, innovation, human resource development and tangible action to support the creation of a sustainable energy ecosystem in Indonesia,’ said Djoko.

Professor Marlon Boarnet from the University of Southern California (USC) Sol Price School of Public Policy, who attended as the keynote speaker, noted that the world is currently in the early phases of transforming mobility toward greener forms.

According to Professor Boarnet, commodities such as biofuel and drop-in fuels play a crucial bridging role in the transition. For sectors harder to decarbonise, such as maritime shipping, high-density energy solutions like green ammonia are required. He also reminded that the energy transition is no longer merely about regulatory compliance, but about a global industrial transformation that must be faced through close collaboration.

In response to these global dynamics, Pertamina is committed to continuing to sharpen scenario planning and its business transformation strategy. Agung concluded by emphasising that the entire transformation process will be carried out in a planned, staged and sustainable manner to safeguard the environment for future generations.
