Pertamina Plants 1,000 Trees and Strengthens Waste Management Innovation
In commemoration of World Environment Day 2026, PT Pertamina (Persero) has planted 1,000 tree seedlings and strengthened community-based waste management innovations at the TPS3R facility in Guwosari Village, Bantul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. This kick-off activity was accompanied by simultaneous tree planting across the Pertamina Group’s operational areas, including the Plaju Refinery and Elnusa units.
PT Pertamina (Persero) Corporate Secretary, Arya Dwi Paramita, stated that this step is part of Pertamina’s efforts to support climate change mitigation while addressing waste management challenges, which remain a major environmental issue in Indonesia. This aligns with the World Environment Day theme, ‘Time to Act for Climate.’
In addition to tree planting, Pertamina provided Rp150 million in assistance for the Go-Sari Edupark Programme. This funding is intended to support the development of the Go-Sari waste collection application, biochar innovation, poultry farming, and the ‘Rewulu Reborn’ programme, which processes fuel tanker seal waste into economically valuable products.
Arya noted that TPS3R Guwosari was selected as the kick-off location because it is managed by the Rewulu Fuel Terminal, an operational area of Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Central Java. This area serves as a prime example of collaboration between corporations, communities, and academics in providing innovative solutions to waste problems.
‘World Environment Day serves as a momentum for Pertamina to continue strengthening real action in environmental preservation. We chose TPS3R Guwosari as the starting point because it demonstrates integrated waste management that provides tangible economic and social benefits to the community,’ Arya said in a statement on Sunday (7/6/2026).
Pertamina’s World Environment Day commemorations will continue on 10 June 2026, through a coastal waste management programme utilising a trash skimmer innovation, a collaboration between Pertamina and the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS).
Nationally, by 2026, the Pertamina Group has implemented 151 environmental programmes focused on waste management and the circular economy. These programmes have successfully processed approximately 951,023 tonnes of waste per year, benefiting 68,788 recipients and creating sustainable economic impacts for the community.
Arya emphasised that environmental innovation is not only pursued through community empowerment but also integrated into company operations through the use of technology and increasingly eco-friendly business practices. ‘Sustainability is a vital part of Pertamina’s business strategy. Therefore, we continue to drive various innovations, both within the community and our operational processes, to reduce environmental impact while supporting Indonesia’s energy transition and sustainable development targets,’ he added.
The Head of Guwosari Village, Masduki, explained that the integrated waste management initiative has assisted 1,500 households in their waste issues. This innovation also provides income for more than 27 residents, including the elderly, who work in various roles such as waste collection, sorting, pressing, composting, and poultry maintenance.
‘We encourage residents to sort waste at home; the better the sorting, the lower the processing costs, or even zero cost. Through these activities, supporting workers can earn salaries of around 2 to 3 million rupiah,’ Masduki explained.
Currently, TPS3R Guwosari has developed various initiatives, including processing organic waste into biochar used as filter material for fuel tanker exhausts, converting plastic waste into pallets and furniture, and repurposing fuel tanker seal waste into various useful craft products.
