PT Pertamina Patra Niaga continues to strengthen national energy distribution reliability through the digitalisation of a fleet monitoring system based on Smartship technology. Currently, 70 vessels owned by Pertamina Patra Niaga have been integrated into the system, enabling real-time operational monitoring of ships from a land-based monitoring centre.

The Director of Fleet Logistics at PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, Arif Yunianto, stated that fleet monitoring digitalisation is part of the company’s effort to improve operational efficiency whilst maintaining reliable energy distribution to various regions across Indonesia.

“The use of an integrated monitoring system enables us to monitor ship movements, operational conditions, and external factors such as weather in real-time. This helps ensure our fleet operates more efficiently whilst safeguarding the continuity of national energy distribution,” Arif said.

The Smartship system consists of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors installed on vessels to continuously transmit operational data to the monitoring centre. Through this system, the company can monitor various vessel operational parameters, ranging from position and sailing routes, weather conditions, to operational indicators such as slow speed that affect sailing efficiency.

Of the total 70 vessels integrated, 22 of them have been equipped with more advanced monitoring technology capable of tracking operational data more comprehensively, including ship navigation, engine performance, and cargo and bunker activities. Going forward, Pertamina Patra Niaga will continue to increase the number of vessels equipped with this technology.

Beyond improving operational visibility, data generated from the monitoring system is also utilised to support the development of preventive maintenance, so that potential operational disruptions can be identified and anticipated earlier.

On another front, the integrated vessels also utilise the ShipManager platform from DNV, one of the world’s leading classification societies. This platform supports vessel operational management through several key modules including Technical (Planned Maintenance System), HSSE, Procurement, and Crewing.

The integration of digital technology, ship sensors, connectivity, and cloud-based data processing enables fleet operational activities to be monitored through an operational dashboard on land in a more comprehensive manner.

In supporting the continuity of national energy distribution, these vessels are also part of 345 ships deployed by Pertamina Patra Niaga for the Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr Task Force (RAFI) 2026 operations, to ensure the distribution of fuel and liquefied petroleum gas can continue safely, reliably, and on time across various regions of Indonesia.
