PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) has announced the successful operation (onstream) of the WPN-7 platform at the offshore Sisi Nubi field in the Mahakam Working Area, East Kalimantan. The initial onstream gas production potential reaches 20 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD).

PHM General Manager Setyo Sapto Edi stated that this success reflects the company’s commitment to conducting safe and reliable upstream oil and gas operations.

“This success demonstrates PHM’s readiness to optimise field potential while prioritising safety and operational reliability,” said Setyo, quoted from a written statement on Wednesday, 1 April 2026.

Setyo added that with the initial production achievement of up to 20 MMSCFD, wells NB-701 and NB-702 are expected to make a significant contribution to maintaining the stability of the national gas supply.

“This also supports the government’s efforts to strengthen energy resilience,” he said.

Previously, the WPN-7 platform, consisting of wells NB-701 and NB-702, began operations on 23 March 2026. Well NB-701 first recorded gas production of up to 9.8 MMSCFD on 25 March 2026, followed by well NB-702 coming onstream on 26 March 2026 with an output of 12.5 MMSCFD.

Currently, PHM continues to monitor and stabilise production from both wells to optimise output to the initial capacity of around 20 MMSCFD. This achievement aligns with the onstream target by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

Setyo noted that two other platforms in the same project had previously become operational: WPS-4 on 4 December 2025 and WPS-5 on 23 February 2026. According to him, the successful operation of this platform is inseparable from a series of comprehensive technical preparations.

“Various tests have been conducted, including Emergency Shutdown (ESD) tests to ensure the protection system functions optimally, as well as leak tests using nitrogen to guarantee facility integrity without hydrocarbon exposure,” he said.

In its operations, both wells employ a controlled ramp-up method, which involves gradual production increases through choke adjustments to maintain pressure and flow stability.

The produced gas is also processed through a Sand Filter Unit to filter out solid particles, thereby supporting facility reliability and long-term operational sustainability.
