Pertamina Faces Geopolitical Risks in Middle East Operations Over Iran-Israel Tensions
PT Pertamina (Persero) is intensifying monitoring of all its operations and fleet in the Middle East to maintain Indonesia’s energy supply stability amid global geopolitical dynamics. The company is prioritising worker safety whilst strengthening risk mitigation measures to ensure operational continuity.
Pertamina is coordinating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Indonesian embassies (KBRI), Indonesian consulates general (KJRI), and local authorities to ensure all business lines—from crude oil procurement to domestic fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) distribution—operate optimally and under control.
Pertamina’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, Muhammad Baron, stated that all workers, operations, and fleet in the Middle East region are under intensive monitoring.
“All workers, operations, and fleet in the Middle East area are being monitored intensively. We are also preparing risk mitigation measures and strengthening communication with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, KBRI, KJRI, and local authorities to maintain operational continuity and crew safety,” Baron said in Jakarta on Monday (2 March 2026).
Pertamina has identified three strategic business units directly exposed to the region’s dynamics. These include global energy transportation activities by PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) as a non-captive operation, upstream operations by Pertamina Internasional EP in Basra, Iraq, and crude oil and product procurement by Pertamina Patra Niaga from Middle Eastern sources.
The company continues to monitor global energy market developments. As an integrated energy company, Pertamina maintains a diversified portfolio of crude oil, fuel, and LPG supply from both domestic production and various partner nations. This provides flexibility in supply management amid uncertainty.
Optimisation of domestic refinery operations is being undertaken to maintain balance in production and distribution. Integrated management from upstream to downstream ensures energy availability for the public remains safe and adequate.
“As the frontline guardian of Indonesia’s energy security, Pertamina is tightening oversight and ensuring crude, fuel, and LPG supply resilience remains secured to meet Indonesian society’s needs,” Baron said.
Strengthening risk mitigation measures are proceeding alongside the company’s transformation towards sustainable energy business. Pertamina is also promoting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles and supporting Indonesia’s net zero emissions target by 2060.
These efforts confirm Pertamina’s role in maintaining Indonesia’s energy security amid global pressures. The company is ensuring supply stability whilst maintaining operational sustainability and public service delivery.
