Pertamina confirms normal fuel distribution following tanker explosion
PT Pertamina Patra Niaga confirms normal fuel distribution in West Kalimantan following an operational incident involving a fuel tanker during berthing at Jetty 2 Integrated Terminal (IT) Pontianak.
“On Monday (25 May), an explosion occurred on a fuel tanker at Jetty 2 Integrated Terminal Pontianak. However, we confirm this will not disrupt fuel distribution to the public,” said Edi Mangun, Area Manager for Communication, Relations & CSR at Pertamina Patra Niaga’s Kalimantan Region, in Pontianak on Tuesday.
He said the company swiftly secured the area and handled operations after hearing a loud noise near the ship’s bow at around 1.17pm WIB.
“Pertamina Patra Niaga acted quickly to secure the area and manage operations to ensure personnel safety and operational security,” he added.
According to him, the IT Pontianak operational team immediately applied emergency procedures, including an emergency shutdown, crew evacuation, and monitoring the surrounding area to ensure the situation was under control.
He confirmed there were no fatalities, though some crew members sustained injuries and received medical treatment.
Besides ensuring personnel safety, Pertamina also confirmed that the fuel cargo on the vessel was safe, thus not affecting the energy distribution chain in West Kalimantan.
Edi explained that Pertalite stock at IT Pontianak is sufficient, supported by floating stock and the next supply ship already in Pontianak.
“We confirm fuel stock and distribution remain normal. The public need not worry as energy supply for West Kalimantan is secure,” Edi said.
He added that operational mitigation measures are ongoing to ensure energy distribution services are not disrupted.
Pertamina is also coordinating closely with relevant stakeholders to support handling and further investigation in line with Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) procedures.
The incident is taken seriously by the company as Pontianak Integrated Terminal is a strategic fuel distribution point in West Kalimantan supporting public and industrial energy needs.
“Pertamina is committed to maintaining operational safety while ensuring uninterrupted energy supply for the public,” he said.
