Pertamina, together with GAPULIMGI (Indonesian Used Cooking Oil Entrepreneurs Association), is strengthening their strategic collaboration in building a sustainable national ecosystem for used cooking oil (UCO) management. This partnership positions the public as the primary actors in the green energy feedstock supply chain, particularly to support the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

GAPULIMGI Association Chairman Tommy Lim stated that this collaboration is a strategic step in accelerating the establishment of a structured, nationally standardized UCO ecosystem.

“This collaboration with Pertamina not only strengthens the supply chain but also provides market certainty for collectors, MSMEs, and the public,” said Tommy.

According to him, public involvement is a key factor because more than 60 percent of national cooking oil consumption comes from the household and MSME sectors. This means the greatest potential volume of used cooking oil lies at the community level.

“Without active public participation, the national UCO supply chain will not be optimal. Public involvement ensures a stable supply while curbing illegal practices such as recycling used cooking oil into consumable oil, and supports the achievement of sustainable energy targets,” he explained.

In encouraging public participation, GAPULIMGI serves as a center for education and advocacy through the development of simple educational materials, training, public campaigns, and collaboration with schools, communities, local governments, and businesses.

The used cooking oil collection scheme is also designed to be layered and flexible, starting from household storage and then channeled through waste banks, drop points, or registered collectors. Meanwhile, MSMEs and culinary businesses are facilitated through partnerships with registered aggregators or collectors for periodic pickups, accompanied by clear incentive schemes and quality standards.

Pertamina Vice President of Corporate Communication Muhammad Baron affirmed that this collaboration is part of the company’s commitment to driving an inclusive energy transition that directly benefits the public.

“Through our collaboration with GAPULIMGI, we are encouraging the active involvement of the public and MSMEs in the green energy supply chain, so that the energy transition can proceed hand in hand with the creation of social value for communities,” Baron explained.

He added that the involvement of various stakeholders serves as a crucial foundation in building a sustainable and transparent UCO ecosystem. This initiative also aligns with the government’s Asta Cita vision of promoting energy self-sufficiency and improving public welfare.

Through its Downstream Subholding, Pertamina and GAPULIMGI are exploring the strengthening of the UCO supply chain, capacity building for business operators, the development of commercial frameworks, and joint policy advocacy with the government to support the growth of the national biofuel industry.

As a leading company in energy transition, Pertamina is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target and advancing the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This commitment is carried out through sustainable transformation oriented toward corporate governance, public services, business sustainability, and the environment through the implementation of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) principles across all business lines and company operations.
