Personal Data Compromised by Fake Reward Scams
The Communication and Information System Security Research Center (CISSReC) has noted that public awareness of cybersecurity remains weak. CISSReC Chairman Pratama Persadha has urged the public to enhance digital privacy and data security measures to prevent breaches that threaten assets. ‘Many members of the public remain lured by fake prize offers, suspicious links, or applications requesting excessive access permissions,’ Pratama said in a written statement on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. ‘Security enhancements can include implementing two-factor authentication, regularly changing passwords, and verifying messages purportedly from banks or official institutions,’ he added. On the government’s role, Pratama stated that the Ministry of Communications and Digital and the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) are responsible for raising public awareness about personal data security. He stressed that the government cannot merely organise seminars or distribute pocket guides to build this awareness. Pratama argued that awareness must be cultivated at the source by intensifying cybersecurity literacy efforts. He also urged the government to demonstrate tangible commitment by expediting the establishment of the Personal Data Protection Agency mandated by the PDP Law. Additionally, he called for accelerated issuance of government regulations as derivatives of the PDP Law. He further pushed for the swift deliberation of the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, which is already on the National Legislation Programme (Prolegnas). ‘Without structural and budgetary sacrifices from the state, the public will merely remain victims rather than conscious contributors,’ he concluded.
