Perlis plans power sale to Thailand
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): The northern Malaysian state of Perlis plans to sell electricity to Thailand from a proposed US$480 million power station, a senior state official said Saturday.
Thai authorities have responded encouragingly to the proposal by the Senglang Power Station which would generate up to 650 megawatts, Abdul Hamid Pawanteh, the chief minister of Perlis state, said.
Officials said power station is to be built by Teknoloji Tenaga Perlis Sdn. Bhd. (TPP), a subsidiary of listed Landmarks Bhd.
TPP has been given a monopoly by Malaysia's federal government to negotiate the sale of electricity to Thailand, officials said, adding that the Perlis state would hold an unspecified stake in the Senglang station.
Hamid said he had met Thai officials over the TPP venture and had been assured Bangkok would be interested in buying at least half of the proposed station's output.
