Through a technological transformation from Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, Pelni now offers significantly improved connectivity quality.

Jakarta — PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia, or PT Pelni (Persero), has strengthened its shipping connectivity by completing the implementation of the Ship Communication System (SisKomKap) based on Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology on 25 passenger ships to enhance safety and service quality.

‘Through a technological transformation from Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Pelni now offers a much more optimal connectivity quality,’ said Pelni Corporate Secretary Ditto Pappilanda, confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Ditto said that previously the GEO system had bandwidth limitations and relatively high latency; the use of LEO technology enables larger bandwidth with very low latency.

This improvement supports more stable and reliable real-time communications, including when ships operate in remote waters.

He stated that the LEO-based SisKomKap implementation is a strategic step in reinforcing the company’s digital transformation while improving safety and service quality for passengers and crew.

Furthermore, he said the modernised SisKomKap dashboard now features new capabilities such as AIS Receiver for monitoring maritime traffic around Pelni ships, One Time Performance Analysis for evaluating operational performance, port positions, rainfall data, wind speed.

‘The Threat & Vulnerabilities [feature] so that we can see the history of important events in the maritime sphere that have occurred,’ Ditto added.

Additionally, Ditto explained that all CCTV footage from ships using the new SisKomKap can be viewed in real-time and via live streaming from the control centre. The technological upgrade can strengthen security and maritime environmental monitoring.

‘We are committed to continuing to innovate and adopt the latest technologies, so that the public can enjoy safer, more comfortable and higher-quality sea travel,’ Ditto added.

Through the implementation of SisKomKap on 25 passenger ships, Ditto added, Pelni is further strengthening its position as a national shipping company that is safe, modern and service-oriented.
