Pelindo and Southwest Papua DPRD Accelerate Development of Sorong Port as Logistics Hub in Eastern Indonesia
Makassar (ANTARA) - PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 4 and the Southwest Papua Provincial DPRD are accelerating the development of Sorong Port as a logistics hub in the Eastern Indonesia region (KTI). “Efforts to strengthen the role of Eastern Indonesia as a centre for economic growth continue to be promoted. One of them is through synergy between PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 4 and the Southwest Papua Provincial DPRD,” said Division Head of Operations for Pelindo Regional 4, Yusida M Palesang, in Makassar on Monday. The working visit by Commission III of the Southwest Papua DPRD to the Pelindo Regional 4 office in Makassar discussed strategic steps to position Sorong Port as the main logistics node in KTI. The visit was led by Deputy Chairman II of the Southwest Papua DPRD, Fredrik F A Marlissa, along with Chairman of Commission III, Max A Hehanussa. Fredrik Marlissa emphasised that the strategic position of Sorong Port in Southwest Papua must be supported by accelerated infrastructure development and improved services. “Sorong Port plays a vital role in supporting connectivity and economic growth. Its development is an urgent need to address increasing economic activities,” he stated. In agreement, Max Hehanussa assessed that collaboration between local government and Pelindo is a key factor for effective port development that directly benefits the community. “We hope this synergy will grow stronger so that development programmes can be directed, measurable, and provide tangible benefits,” he said. Meanwhile, Yusida expressed Pelindo’s commitment to ongoing gradual development, both in terms of infrastructure and improvements in operational service quality. According to her, several strategic plans have been prepared, ranging from increasing terminal capacity, optimising loading and unloading facilities, to strengthening digital-based operational systems to enhance efficiency and the port’s competitiveness.
