PDIP Calls for Cancellation of 105,000 Pickup Truck Import from India: Lacks Transparency
PDIP faction leader in Commission VI of the DPR, Mufti Anam, has expressed his disappointment with the planned import of 105,000 pickup trucks from India. Mufti Anam has requested that the import process be cancelled due to its perceived lack of transparency, as Commission VI of the DPR, which partners with the Ministry of Cooperatives and Agrinas Pangan Nusantara, was not informed of the plan.
“I am frankly very disappointed with the polemic surrounding the import of 105,000 pickup trucks from India for the Red and White Village Cooperative (KDMP) program. As a member of Commission VI of the DPR, which partners with the Ministry of Cooperatives and Agrinas Pangan Nusantara, we never received any explanation in meetings regarding this large-scale import plan, so we were surprised to suddenly learn about it from the media,” said Mufti Anam to reporters on Friday (February 26, 2026).
He stated that the import of 105,000 pickup trucks is not a routine transaction, but has a broad impact on the automotive industry and employment in Indonesia. Mufti Anam then highlighted the fact that some of the pickup trucks have already arrived in Indonesia.
“Ironically, we only learned about this plan from news reports. Even when the Deputy Speaker of the DPR requested a postponement, and the Minister of Cooperatives stated that they were waiting for the President to return to the country, the fact is that thousands of units have already arrived in Indonesia,” said Mufti Anam.
“This means that this was not a sudden decision. It has been planned. The question is, why was the DPR, as a supervisory partner, never consulted? To whom is Agrinas accountable? On whose orders? For whose benefit, when even the users who will be using them are not aware?”
According to him, this moment could be used to encourage the domestic automotive industry. Mufti believes that this import policy contradicts the government’s program of self-reliance.
“This should be a moment to encourage local content, encourage domestic manufacturers, and even become an entry point for strengthening the national car industry, not instead open the door for imported products. We often talk about downstreaming, industrial self-reliance, and even boast about products like the Maung as a symbol of the revival of domestic manufacturing. But at the same time, the need for 105,000 vehicles is being met from abroad. This is contradictory. Let’s not let the slogan of self-reliance just become empty rhetoric,” he said.
Mufti proposed that the plan to import 105,000 pickup trucks from India be cancelled. He does not want the program to become a long-term burden.
“I am not just asking for it to be postponed, but cancelled. It is clear that the process is not transparent and has not been carefully planned, so it is better to cancel it than to let it become a long-term burden,” said Mufti.
“Let’s not let the Village Cooperatives, which should be a tool for people’s economic sovereignty, become an entry point for imports. Let’s not, in the name of building villages, kill domestic industry and weaken our own competitiveness,” he added.
He suggested prioritizing domestic products. Mufti hopes that policies that have a major impact will be decided together.
“If the intention is to build villages and strengthen the national industry, then let’s not create policies that undermine each other. Let’s not talk about supporting national products, but in practice, engage in large-scale imports,” said Mufti.
“We will summon the relevant parties to be held accountable for this in the DPR. Because for us, state funds, the future of villages, and the fate of domestic industry are not things that can be decided in secret,” he added.
Import Postponed
Minister of Cooperatives, Ferry Juliantono, said that the import of 105,000 pickup trucks from India to Indonesia has been postponed until President Prabowo Subianto arrives in the country. However, he stated that the import of the vehicles is not under his authority.
“It was decided yesterday that it is not the authority of the Ministry of Cooperatives. So it has been decided to postpone it, until President Prabowo arrives,” said Minister Ferry after speaking at the 99th Indonesian Islamic Economics Seminar, Menara Bank Mega, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (February 24, 2026).
He said that the policy to import 105,000 pickup trucks from India for the Red and White Cooperatives is awaiting a decision from President Prabowo Subianto. “Wait for the President,” he said.
Previously, Deputy Speaker of the DPR, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, responded to the plan to import pickup trucks from India for the operational activities of the Red and White Cooperatives, which has become a topic of discussion. Dasco asked the government to postpone the plan.
“So, the plan to import 105,000 pickup trucks from India, I have conveyed a message to the government to postpone the plan, considering that the President is still abroad,” said Dasco at the parliament complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (February 23).
