PDI-P urges Mega to make speech
DENPASAR: Members of the Indonesian Democratic Party of
Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) in Bali are inviting party chairwoman
Megawati Soekarnoputri to deliver a political speech at the
party's 29th anniversary celebrations in Badung on Jan. 23.
"Party supporters in Bali are really longing for a political
speech by the party chairwoman," organizing committee chief I
Made Urip said in Denpasar on Friday.
Made, accompanied by PDI Perjuangan Bali Chapter chairman Ida
Bagus Wesnawa, said they had approached Megawati, who was
catapulted to the presidency in July 2001, but no decision had
been made thus far.
Megawati is scheduled to visit Bali from Jan. 23 through Jan.
24 to open the congress of Muhammadiyah, the country's second-
largest Muslim organization.
"We are hoping that Ibu Mega will spare the time to meet PDI
Perjuangan members and sympathizers in Bali," said Made, a member
of House of Representatives Commission III.
Last year, Megawati suddenly canceled her participation in the
party's 28th anniversary celebrations in Denpasar, without giving
a reason. -- Antara
