PBNU stresses unity and religious knowledge in the digital age
Lamongan, East Java (ANTARA) — Nahdlatul Ulama’s Central Executive Board (PBNU) has stressed the importance of maintaining unity and strengthening knowledge of religion to face the challenges posed by the development of digital technology, including the spread of fake news and moral issues.
PBNU Chairman KH Abdul Hakim Mahfudz, known as Gus Kikin, speaking in Lamongan on Thursday, highlighted the importance of making the Qanun Asasi a guide for NU officials in maintaining unity and ukhuwah for the benefit of the nation.
“The values of togetherness passed down by NU’s founders are an important foundation for the country’s progress,” he said.
Meanwhile, PBNU’s Rais Aam, KH Miftachul Akhyar, underscored the importance of religious knowledge amid uncertain times, including when people face bullying, information framing and fake news that can make those in the wrong believe they are right.
“Santri always play a role for Indonesia, even without being asked. Without santri, there would have been no Indonesian independence. Today, too, digital-era technology without morality will become a disaster, which is why the role of santri is essential,” he said.
He said santri have five strategic roles in the nation: spiritual, intellectual, entrepreneurial, leadership and global. These roles include strengthening faith and character, mastering science and digital literacy, developing independent businesses, demonstrating principled leadership, and contributing internationally.
The East Java Nahdlatul Ulama Regional Executive Board (PWNU) has also scheduled a series of National Santri Day events during October and November. They include a pilgrimage to the founders’ graves in Jombang on 18 October, a National Santri Day assembly on 22 October, and the HSN Soccer League 2026, featuring 32 teams, from 27 to 31 October 2026.
