Patience Tested on the KRL Green Line Year After Year
Imagine a Monday evening rush hour, compounded by light drizzle, when one of Jakarta’s busiest KRL lines experiences hours-long disruptions. That is precisely what commuters on the Green Line—Jakarta’s Tanah Abang-Rangkasbitung route—faced on Monday, 5 May 2026.
The Green Line serves as a key lifeline for workers, passing through densely populated residential areas. However, chaos was unavoidable that Monday afternoon. Overhead power lines (LAA) were reportedly struck by lightning, halting KRL services.
Yet, it seems the patience of Green Line commuters is tested year after year. According to detikcom records on Tuesday (5/5/2026), incidents on the KRL Green Line inevitably lead to passenger pile-ups, schedule changes, and long sighs of exasperation.
What are the disruptions on the KRL Green Line from year to year?
- 2023: Truck Crashes into LAA Pole
In 2023, the KRL Green Line experienced a disruption when a truck collided with an LAA pole in the Bintaro area of South Jakarta. This incident occurred on 25 June 2023, during the morning rush hour.
As a result, several trains were delayed for over an hour. Many passengers exited stations to seek alternative transport.
The truck that struck the pole was only cleared by 10:00 WIB. Personnel from the TNI, police, KAI, PPSU, and local residents worked to remove its load.
- 2024: Spring Bed Wire Incident
The KRL Green Line faced another disruption on 30 January 2024, when a train became entangled in a spring bed wire near Pondok Ranji Station.
The incident happened around 18:17 WIB, during the evening rush hour. Passengers were delayed for hours.
One passenger recounted the ordeal while the train was halted. Commuters reportedly suffered from intense heat and were stuck for some time.
“I am in carriage 4. We’ve been stuck for about an hour. It’s extremely hot,” said one passenger, Tuti, to detikcom.
- 2025: Disruptions for Three Consecutive Days
In 2025, disruptions occurred over three consecutive days on 20, 21, and 22 October.
The disruption on 20 October happened during the evening rush hour. Trains were delayed due to operational issues, with a 28-minute lag.
The following day, another KRL disruption struck during the morning commute, stemming from a signal failure between Daru and Parung Panjang stations.
KRL services were disrupted again on 22 October, this time due to an operational issue or a train derailment at Rangkasbitung Station.
“There is an operational issue resulting from the derailment of KA 1689 (Rangkasbitung-Tanah Abang) at Rangkasbitung Station, which is currently being handled by personnel. We urge users to prioritise safety and follow staff instructions. We apologise for the inconvenience,” PT KAI Commuter Indonesia (KCI) posted on its X account @CommuterLine on Wednesday (22/10/2025).
- 2026: Lightning Strike on LAA and Flooding
The latest disruption occurred last night. KRL services faced power issues, flooding, and stuffy carriages.
The Tanah Abang-Rangkasbitung route initially experienced a disruption on Monday (4/5) afternoon at 17:30 WIB. KAI Commuter reported that the issue was due to electrical problems from a lightning strike. Staff implemented journey diversions in response.
“After inspection by personnel, there is an operational disruption to the Overhead Power Lines between Jurangmangu and Pondok Ranji stations due to a lightning strike, and it is currently being addressed,” KAI Commuter stated on its official X account on Monday (4/5).
Several KRL users posted complaints about the incident. They noted that the air conditioning failed, making the carriages stuffy.
In addition to the lightning, the Kebayoran-Pondok Ranji track was also flooded due to heavy rain.
“There is water pooling due to heavy rain between Kebayoran and Pondok Ranji stations,” read the @CommuterLine update, viewed on Monday (4/5) at 18:56 WIB.
As a result, passenger build-ups occurred at several stations along the Tanah Abang-Rangkasbitung route from yesterday afternoon into the evening. Services returned to normal around 21:00 WIB.
