Pasar Rebo Ring-Fencing to Reduce Rioting, Sociologist: Not Yet Addressing Root Causes
Sociologist Nia Elvina of Universitas Nasional has warned that the policy to build a ‘ring fence’ around the Pasar Rebo Flyover area has not yet touched the root causes of the rioting that has long occurred in the area.
According to her, resolving social conflict is not enough by providing physical facilities alone, but must be accompanied by strengthening values within the family and in education.
‘I believe the policy is not entirely appropriate, because the root causes of rioting have not been addressed. The problem of rioting stems from the realm of values or upbringing. Upbringing from families and educational institutions,’ Nia told Media Indonesia on Monday (19 May).
She explained that the formation of character in children and adolescents is heavily influenced by the socioeconomic condition of the family. Therefore, efforts to curb rioting must also start from strengthening the local economy around Pasar Rebo.
‘So that upbringing from families and educational institutions can be optimal, if the family’s economic foundation is already strong. In other words, parents in the Pasar Rebo area already have decent jobs,’ she said.
Nia assessed that the unstable economic conditions make many parents focus more on meeting daily needs than supervising their children.
‘Thus they can focus on educating their sons and daughters. If the parents’ or community’s focus remains on how to meet the needs of living, then I think the issue of rioting will be difficult to minimise or eliminate in society,’ she concluded. (Far/P-3)
