PT Pertamina (Persero) recently held a meeting with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in Washington D.C. This meeting serves as a follow-up to the President’s directives following his working visit to the United States in February 2026.

This step is also part of Pertamina’s efforts to strengthen Indonesia-United States relations through exploring strategic cooperation in the energy sector. The meeting was attended by Pertamina’s Deputy Director Oki Muraza, Corporate Secretary Arya Dwi Paramita, and several DOE officials, including Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asia and the Americas Elizabeth Urbanas, Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Cooperation Aleshia Duncan, and Director of Asian Affairs Margaux Murali.

The two parties discussed strengthening energy trade cooperation, energy supply security, oil and gas technology development, and opportunities for collaboration in developing non-conventional oil and gas between the two countries.

Pertamina’s Deputy Director, Oki Muraza, stated that the United States is one of Pertamina’s strategic partners in supporting national energy resilience. Given that Indonesia is one of the countries with the fastest energy consumption growth in the Asia-Pacific region, it requires a secure, affordable, and sustainable energy supply.

“Therefore, Pertamina continues to strengthen strategic partnerships with the United States to support energy supply security, technology development, and enhancement of the national energy sector’s capacity,” Oki said in his statement on Monday (11/5/2026).

Currently, the United States is one of Pertamina’s main energy suppliers. More than 70 percent of Indonesia’s LPG imports come from the United States, with a volume of around more than 5 million MT in 2025.

To maintain energy supply certainty and support domestic price stability, Pertamina is also pushing for strengthened long-term cooperation through long-term contract (LTC) schemes with energy producers and exporters from the United States.

In addition to LPG, Pertamina is continuing to explore crude oil imports from the United States. In line with the development of national refinery capacity through the Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP), Pertamina sees opportunities to increase processing of light sweet crude types such as WTI from the United States.

In the meeting, Pertamina and the DOE also discussed opportunities for knowledge sharing regarding the management of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) and the development of energy storage infrastructure to strengthen national energy resilience and anticipate potential global supply disruptions.

In addition to strengthening energy trade, Pertamina is promoting collaboration with U.S. energy companies in developing non-conventional oil and gas resources in Indonesia. Potential cooperation includes technology transfer, pilot projects, upstream sector investments, human resource capability development, and drilling and completion technologies.

Furthermore, Pertamina is continuing to strengthen technology collaboration with U.S. energy companies in developing digital oilfields, reservoir optimisation, and advanced drilling technology to support increased national conventional oil and gas production. Pertamina is currently also strengthening partnerships with several global energy companies from the United States.

Pertamina’s Corporate Secretary, Arya Dwi Paramita, emphasised that strengthening Indonesia-U.S. energy relations is an important momentum to drive collaboration that adds value to national energy resilience.

“Pertamina views this cooperation as an opportunity to accelerate oil and gas technology development, enhance human resource capacity, and open access to investments that support national energy independence and sustainability,” Arya said.
