Commission I Deputy Chair of the House of Representatives Dave Laksono has backed President Prabowo Subianto’s decision to keep the Republic of Indonesia (RI) as part of the Board of Peace (BoP), established by United States President Donald Trump.

Dave believes the President’s decision demonstrates that Indonesia should not act hastily before understanding the geopolitical situation between Israel and Palestine.

“The decision to take this approach means the President recognises that we should not rush into policy-making until we truly understand the situation,” Dave said following a Golkar Party mudik farewell event in Jakarta on Tuesday (17 March).

Dave is confident that Prabowo’s decision to keep Indonesia in the BoP has been based on careful deliberation. According to him, although there has been no significant movement to date, Indonesia will continue to focus on supporting Palestinian independence.

“We remain committed to finding ways to improve the welfare and secure the independence of the Palestinian nation from occupation, so they become a nation respected among mankind,” Dave said.

The Golkar politician also responded to pressure from various quarters calling for Indonesia to withdraw. According to him, the party is still monitoring developments. However, Dave said the party defers all decisions to the President.

“But we leave the decision to the President to determine policy, as he is better informed, both in terms of communications with heads of state and regarding the direction of the BoP itself,” he said.

In an exclusive interview with Bloomberg, Prabowo affirmed that Indonesia’s presence in the BoP is solely to support Palestinian independence through a two-state solution.

Prabowo believes Indonesia’s membership in the BoP provides several advantages, including the ability to influence a long-term solution for both nations.

“If we are within it (the BoP), we can still influence and work towards a long-term solution, which in our view is an independent Palestine, a two-state solution,” Prabowo said.

Prabowo stated that all discussions related to the BoP are currently suspended following escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. Indonesia, he stressed, will not join any military alliance.

According to him, Indonesia remains consistent in implementing its principle of independent and active foreign policy.

“We cannot be part of any military alliance,” Prabowo said.
