Parliament to Approve Domestic Workers Protection Bill as Parliamentary Initiative Tomorrow
DEPUTY DPR Chair Sufmi Dasco Ahmad stated that parliament will approve the Domestic Workers Protection Bill (RUU PPRT) during a plenary session on Thursday, 12 March 2026. The statement was made following a meeting with the DPR’s Legislative Body, which will be followed by leadership meetings and consultation with the DPR Council of Presiding Officers. “Parliament will approve the RUU PPRT as a parliamentary initiative and it will be immediately processed into legislation,” Dasco said at the DPR complex on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.
The RUU PPRT has been proposed for parliamentary discussion since 2004. During the 2024-2029 parliamentary term, the bill was included in the 2025 National Legislative Programme (Prolegnas). However, its discussion has yet to gain momentum. During the 19th DPR plenary session of the 2022-2023 legislative period, nine political party factions in parliament presented their respective views and agreed to the RUU PPRT as a parliamentary initiative.
Sufmi Dasco Ahmad stated that the RUU PPRT is targeted for completion as legislation this year, citing legislators’ commitment to meet the target for law formation and responsiveness to public aspirations. “God willing, this year is the target,” said the Daily Chair of the Gerindra Party leadership.
Previously, the National Network for Domestic Worker Advocacy questioned the DPR’s and government’s commitment to discussing and approving the RUU PPRT. This follows President Prabowo Subianto’s statement on 1 May 2025 that the bill would be completed within three months. “What is really happening that it has not been approved for 22 years?” asked Jala PRT Coordinator Lita Anggraini during a parliamentary hearing on Thursday, 5 March 2026.
DPR Chair Puan Maharani explained reasons why the RUU PPRT has not yet been completed and approved. Puan stated that the DPR is still seeking input from various parties to complete the bill’s contents. “So there is more input from certain parties, with meaningful participation not just from one side, but from all involved parties to make it more comprehensive,” Puan said at the parliamentary complex on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.
She noted that this approach is undertaken to ensure the regulations do not overlap with other legislation.
