Jakarta — The chairwoman of the Indonesian Parliament’s (DPR) Commission X, Hetifah Sjaifudian, has endorsed the government’s issuance of a joint ministerial decree (SKB) from seven ministers regarding guidelines for the utilisation and learning of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in education.

“We view the policy in the seven-minister decree that restricts instant AI usage for primary and secondary school students as an appropriate anticipatory measure to protect children’s learning processes,” said Hetifah when confirmed in Jakarta on Monday.

Hetifah believes that the ease of obtaining instant answers through AI can hinder the development of critical thinking abilities, creativity, and academic integrity among students. She noted that the policy also serves as a reminder that strengthening the foundation of basic education must not be compromised by technological convenience that could make the learning process superficial.

In terms of implementation, Hetifah has requested that oversight of AI usage among students not be placed solely on one party. Therefore, she is encouraging a collaborative approach involving schools, teachers, parents, and the government.

According to her, schools need to design assignments that emphasise process and analytical abilities of students. On the other hand, she believes that parents must also play an active role in monitoring device usage at home.

“Ultimately, the goal of this policy is not merely to prohibit, but to build awareness among students so they can utilise technology responsibly as a learning aid, not as a shortcut,” said Hetifah.

She stated that the DPR strongly supports the government’s future announcement of a dedicated AI platform for students.

“The presence of an educational AI platform that is safe and specifically designed for children will be a strategic solution. This aligns with our efforts to protect students from negative content, whilst also providing a healthy digital learning space that is productive and supports the development of their abilities,” said Hetifah Sjaifudian.
