JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has requested PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, or BNI, to thoroughly investigate the case of embezzlement of customer funds in Aek Nabara, North Sumatra. Although the customer’s funds have already been returned.

OJK Commissioner Chairman Friderica Widyasari Dewi stated that BNI has returned the funds belonging to the Credit Union of Aek Nabara Parish amounting to Rp 28.25 billion on 22 April 2026.

“BNI has completed the full return of funds to the CU of Aek Nabara Parish,” said the woman familiarly known as Kiki during a press conference on the results of the OJK RDK for April 2026 in Jakarta on Tuesday (5/5/2026).

Although the fund return process has been completed, Kiki emphasised that the handling of the case is not yet over.

In addition, OJK has also requested BNI to conduct a comprehensive internal investigation into the case to ensure that similar incidents do not recur in the future.

For information, the case emerged after the treasurer of the CU of Aek Nabara Parish, Sister Natalia Situmorang, revealed allegations of fictitious investment practices involving the former Head of the State-Owned Bank Cash Office Unit in Aek Nabara, Andi Hakim Febriansyah.

The alleged embezzlement of parishioners’ funds had previously caused unrest among the congregation before the funds were finally confirmed to be returned.

Previously, BNI President Director Putrama Wahju Setyawan stated that funds belonging to members of the Credit Union of Aek Nabara Parish amounting to approximately Rp 28 billion would be returned in full on 22 April 2026.

Putrama said the decision was taken following an agreement between BNI and the CU of Aek Nabara Parish.

“We have found a solution that we will immediately settle together with the Credit Union of Aek Nabara Parish, so that at the earliest tomorrow, 22 April 2026, we can carry out the return of funds belonging to the Credit Union of Aek Nabara Parish. Full, as conveyed by the CU of Aek Nabara Parish,” said Putrama at the DPR Building, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (21/4/2026).

Putrama also expressed appreciation for President Prabowo Subianto’s attention to the resolution of the case.

Regarding internal evaluation, Putrama emphasised that this case serves as a lesson for the company, particularly in improving financial literacy and strengthening internal oversight aspects, including the implementation of know your employee principles.

BNI, he continued, is also committed to promoting financial literacy to customers to prevent similar incidents from recurring in the future.

The agreement also involved representatives from Aek Nabara Parish.

Meanwhile, the legal process regarding the alleged embezzlement has been handed over to the North Sumatra Regional Police, with the perpetrator currently being processed according to applicable regulations.
