Pariaman Regency Strengthens Mitigation to Face Earthquake and Tsunami Threats
The Pariaman City Government in West Sumatra is strengthening disaster mitigation measures to address threats of earthquakes and tsunamis through the preparation of a blueprint for mitigation and the utilisation of early warning technology, aimed at minimising casualties.
“I have already instructed the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to create a disaster mitigation blueprint. This will later be submitted to Bappenas and BNPB, considering the area’s vulnerability to disasters,” said Mayor of Pariaman Yota Balad in Pariaman on Tuesday.
He stated that the blueprint encompasses mapping of evacuation routes and more organised evacuation points for the community.
In addition to planning, Pariaman City is now equipped with High Frequency Radar (HFR) technology, which is a grant from the French Government through BMKG worth Rp30 billion.
The location for placing the device is at Anas Malik Beach Park, which is also one of the tourist areas in Pariaman.
Alongside the development of the mitigation blueprint and the use of this technology, the Pariaman City Government is also continuously enhancing residents’ understanding of disasters and self-evacuation so that they can save themselves when a disaster occurs.
Separately, the Main Secretary of BNPB, Rustian, during an inspection of the construction of Permanent Housing Units (Huntap) in Pariaman on Friday (1/5), emphasised the importance for local governments in areas prone to earthquakes and tsunamis to improve their disaster mitigation systems.
Furthermore, he stressed the importance of earthquake-resistant building constructions so that such disasters do not have a significant impact not only on the buildings but also on the safety of their occupants.
