Panarub workers rally for JPK

TANGERANG: Some 300 workers of PT Panarub, a company that produces Adidas shoes in Pasar Baru, Tangerang municipality, staged a rally at the factory compound on Friday to demand health allowances (JPK).

The rally degenerated into a clash with dozens of security personnel and management staff when the latter tried to block the workers' way into the factory.

No one was injured during the clash because several police officers managed to calm the angry workers.

As the rally started at 1 p.m, the workers, from the Shoe Factory Workers Association (Perbupas) stood in rows for two hours at the factory gate. While carrying dozens of posters and banners, they sang labor movement songs and made speeches to express their demands.

"We have repeatedly delivered our demands in a written statement to the management and have even asked the municipal manpower agency to force the management to accede to them, but to no avail," Ngadinah, Perbupas secretary told The Jakarta Post.

The management promised to award the JPK to workers last December, but they had demanded it in July last year, she said, adding that the workers had long been awaiting the JPK allowance.--JP
